We are proud to introduce our newest Marketing Solutions Consultant, Tim Puzio. Tim joined the R.C. Brayshaw & Company team a few months ago. In this short time he has already had great insights and contributed to a variety of projects. Being new to the industry, he has spent his time helping in several departments and training in all aspects of the business with our Vice President, Jim Newcomb. We think he has great things ahead of him!
When I graduated from St. Michael’s College in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. To be fair, does anyone really know what they want to do at 21? I love my parents, but I did not want to live at home in New Jersey with them for too long after graduation. So three months after graduating, I moved to Massachusetts to start a job as a door-to-door salesperson for a cable television, phone, and internet company. I bet you are thinking, “People still do door-to-door sales?”
The answer is yes, they do, and it can be really tough. I lasted about three months as a door-to-door salesman. It doesn’t seem like much, but many of my coworkers lasted less than a week. Those three months were a great crash course in business and life principles. The job pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and as a result I learned an incredible amount in that short period of time. Shortly after, my next job was as a car rental salesperson. If you’ve ever rented a car, then you know that this entailed selling optional insurance products, pre-paid fuel, and vehicle upgrades, and most people plan to refuse these items before they even walk in the door.
The experience that I gained at these jobs made me realize that working in sales can be difficult when you are selling a product or service that you don’t believe in, especially if your “clients” don’t want to talk to you. I had found myself selling products that the customers neither wanted nor needed.
When I started looking for a new opportunity, I wanted to make sure that it was the right kind of sales job. I wanted to find a position where the product or service that I was selling could actually make a difference. I found the right opportunity as a Marketing Solutions Consultant at R.C. Brayshaw. As a Marketing Solutions Consultant, I have the opportunity to help clients obtain a huge variety of high quality products and services, produced by really great people who care about each and every customer and task they do. It amazes me how much creativity, care, and attention to detail a group of people can possess. Now that I am proud of the company I work for and all that we produce, using some of the most state-of-the-art equipment and methods available, sales feels like a much better career choice.
One thing that I was not prepared for when I joined R.C. Brayshaw was the task of learning a new language: the language of printing. Coming into this environment, I’m already accustomed to listening to people speak languages that I do not understand. In college, I spent five months studying abroad in Denmark, and Danish is known as an extraordinarily difficult language to learn. It does not help that it’s not phonetic. Even back home, my girlfriend’s parents were both born and raised in Sweden and still often speak Swedish. Needless to say, I often find myself lost at the dinner table.
Luckily for me, the language of print is not as difficult as Danish or Swedish, and I also have a lot of great teachers at R.C. Brayshaw. For example, my manager, Jim, has been in the printing industry for almost thirty years. I am convinced that he has experienced almost every possible scenario that can arise in the industry. He knows more than I can imagine I ever will. Slowly but surely, Jim is helping me learn the ins and outs of the print world, including everything from the language to the equipment, and beyond. My goal is to become a knowledgeable consultant capable of guiding clients to the marketing solutions that will help them achieve their goals. With all of my great teachers at R.C. Brayshaw I hope to achieve a good level of understanding as quickly as possible so that I can put that knowledge to work helping customers.
